The Environmental Center classroom will be complete and available for use when classes begin for the Fall 2014 semester. The foundation for the new farm house will begin this week.
Construction for the roadway in front of Paton House is ongoing and the underground utility work is almost complete. The roadway and sidewalk in front of Paton House and behind Alumni Hall will be open for vehicular and pedestrian traffic for the start of the Fall 2014 semester. Excavation for Alumni Hall has begun and will continue for the next few weeks.
Kessel Student Center
The necessary summer work in order to open the building for the Fall 2014 semester is progressing on schedule. Fire protection for the building is complete on the lower level. Fire protection on the second level is underway. The work on the first and second floor bathrooms continues. The kitchen and servery work continues as well as the foundation for the expansion. Concrete truck deliveries will continue this week. When the Kessel Student Center reopens on August 30, 2014, the kitchen will be fully functional along with a portion of the servery. Gottesman Room and Setter's Lounge will be used as temporary dining halls. Dining will be available beginning on August 30th.
The site work improvements scheduled for this summer has had some changes. The underground utility work that goes under the roadway in front of Paton House is underway. Once the utility work is complete, the work on building the road can begin. The roadway and sidewalk in front of Paton House will be open for vehicular and pedestrian traffic for the start of the Fall 2014 semester. The work on improvements to Choate circle will begin on Monday July 28, 2014 and will continue through August 22, 2014. Access to Choate House will be maintained at all times. These improvements to Choate Circle, along with the new stairs and pathway leading to the Kessel Student Center, will be complete by August 30, 2014. The new parking area behind North Hall has begun and will continue through the week. Due to the unexpected utility services found in the area of the new parking lot next to Choate House, a decision has been made to change the grade at the site so the utilities remain as is. Due to this decision the new roadway and parking lot adjacent to Choate House is scheduled to open in September. After a review of the schedule and finding unexpected utility services in front of Martin Hall, it was decided to postpone the work in front of Martin Hall to summer 2015. At the end of August 2014, the construction zone will be isolated to the center of campus, the lot adjacent to Choate, and the fields, as we continue with work on Alumni Hall, the expansion of Kessel, and the Athletics fields.
The dredging and ecological restoration of Choate Pond is progressing and will be substantially completed by the start of the semester. For safety precautions, Shirley Beth's Way will need to close to vehicular and pedestrian traffic between Friday, July 25, and Friday, August 22, 2014. Construction and Emergency Response Vehicles will have exclusive access to this road. Pedestrians on the south portion of campus will need to walk behind Miller and Lienhard to access the upper campus. For the next few weeks, this will be the safest route for pedestrians. Signage will be installed along these temporary pedestrian routes. Shirley Beth's Way will be restored and will reopen on August 22, 2014.
Tree removal at the site will begin in the next few weeks. The site plan amendment to reflect recent changes to the design of the Athletics Field House and Fields has been submitted. At the planning board meeting on July 21, 2014, the planning board voted to have the site plan amendment application be added to the public hearing agenda on August 7th, at which point we will know if the application gets approved or needs a further planning board meeting.
All work is weather dependent, we will promptly notify the community of any changes.
